The Macedonian crystal cave is one of the two caves of this kind in the world that contain the unique selenite crystal (the other one is in Mexico). The Crystal cave is a geological wonder of its own kind. Located on a half way between the city of Debar and the Spa “Banja Kosovrasti”, under the large white hill in the gypsum mine owned by the German company Knauf. The Romans were the first who discovered this place more than 2200 years ago.
The Bigorski monastery St. John the Baptist/Jovan Krstitel – a monastery on the road between Gostivar and Debar. The monastery was founded by the monk Jovan in 1020, and in the 16th century was destroyed and only one small church remained from the whole complex. It was restored in 1743 by the Hieromonk Hilarion. He is the first abbot of the Bigorski monastery in recent times. The name Bigorski comes from the fact that it was built of limestone. The monastery complex consists of church dedicated to John the Baptist, the ossuary, the Seymen defense tower, monastery lodgings, and the newly built guest lodgings. The monastery is widely known for its iconostasis created in the period from 1829 to 1835.
Mavrovo dam and lake are situated in the Mavrovo region, in the western part of R. N. Macedonia. It is a very attractive touristic center, being frequented for recreational activities such as swimming, boating, trout fishing and mountain hiking during the summer, while skiing in winter. A distinctive building in the lake is the half-submerged church of Saint Nicholas. Since 1952 it is part of the Mavrovo National Park. The Mavrovo dam was finished in 1952, it is 54 m high and 210 m long. With its surface of 13.7 km2, the lake is one of the most extensive artificial lakes of the country. It is surrounded by the Šar Mountains on the North and the Bistra Mountains on the South, both exceeding heights of 2000 m.
